Specialty Contact Lenses
Specialty contact lenses are custom made for those who cannot successfully wear traditional contact lenses, those with very high prescriptions, or when medically necessary such as with severe dry eye (neurotrophic or Sjogrens disease), keratoconus or pellucid marginal degeneration.
Scleral contact lenses are a type of specialty lens that fits over the entire cornea and touches the less sensitive area of the eye called the sclera. Because these lenses do not touch the cornea and do not move when blinking they provide superior comfort and vision compared to other specialty lens types.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) contact lenses are specially designed to temporarily reshape the cornea and improve vision. It’s like orthodontics for your eyes and the treatment is often compared to dental braces. Most ortho-k lenses are worn at night to reshape the front surface of the eye while you sleep. This offers a surgery-free way for some people to have clear vision during the day without needing glasses or contact lenses. The process is reversible but can be maintained if you keep wearing the lenses as directed.
