Comprehensive Eye Exams
Adults are recommended to have a comprehensive eye examination every 1-2 years. Many common eye diseases have no initial symptoms but can be prevented if diagnosed and treated early by a doctor of optometry.
A routine comprehensive eye exam assesses the following components:
- Visual acuity – how well you see.
- Binocular vision – how well your eyes work together.
- Stereo acuity – depth perception.
- Colour vision – the ability to see different shades of colour.
- Refraction – need for a glasses prescription.
- Keratometry – the curvature of your cornea.
- Slit-lamp evaluation – use of a microscope that allows the doctor to check the health of your eyes.
- Tonometry – measures eye pressure which is associated with glaucoma.
- Retinal imaging – photos or scans of your retina can allow for early detection of eye diseases.
